Shanghai International Medical Zone (SIMZ) is a new-concept medical scientific zone under the support of National Ministry of Health (MOH) and ratification of Shanghai Municipal Government. It has become a tower of strength to support Shanghai in becoming the medical center of Asia.

　　SIMZ has two core industries – advanced medical device manufacturing and modern medical service industry, surrounding which, fields like pharmaceuticals R&D, sales as well as CRO have made rapid growth. SIMZ targets to become an environment-friendly, technology leading, and ecologically harmonious modern medical city that delivers high-end healthcare services and attracts medical devices and bio-medicine businesses with cutting-edge technologies. It covers an area of 11.8 km2, among which, 2.12 km2 are public green field. Centering two core industries, it has into six functional areas: the International Hospital Center, the Industrial Area for Medical Devices and Biomedicine, the International Medical Campus, the Clinical/Medical Research Park, the International Rehabilitation Center, and the International Business Center.

　　The six areas supplement each other in both functions and resources, thus forming the two complete industry chains in harmony - the Modern Medical Services, and the Medical Devices and Bio-medicine manufacture. Since it started development and construction in 2005, SIMZ has set up high standard infrastructure and service platform to attract world-renowned enterprises, including: Siemens Medical Asia Center of Excellence, Shanghai Draeger Medical Instrument, Shanghai Simcere Pharmaceutical, Shanghai Huayi (Group), Shanghai ChangLong Life Science R&D Center, etc. While upgrading industries capability, the zone is putting more efforts on the development of supporting facilities for modern service industry. Now it has been entitled as one of the municipal producer service demonstrative zones. SIMZ has developed several projects: the Modern Business Park, the Pioneer Park for Overseas Returnees, and the Manufacture & Education & Research Base. Those are set up specifically to help overseas medical professionals and entrepreneurs of small and medium companies with their business development. In terms of modern healthcare service industry, a major healthcare project in the eleventh five-year plan of Shanghai Municipal Government, Proton and Heavy Ion Treatment Center, is under construction. Besides, other high-end medical service institutions are going to be set up in SIMZ: Sino-German Friendship Hospital, International Heart and Vascular Hospital, Tokushinkai Dental Hospital, etc.
